What is a bequest?

A bequest is a donation paid from your estate after you have died, in accordance with your written instructions included in your will.

Why give a bequest to us?will

Bequeathing money to Dying with Dignity NSW in your will is a simple and effective way to support our work.  You may find it preferable to giving us a donation now, as a bequest is made when you no longer need funds to maintain your current lifestyle or pay for unplanned medical expenses etc.

Receipt of a bequest can have a significant impact on the level of activity the Dying with Dignity NSW is able to engage in. A bequest, no matter how small, is most welcome and appreciated.

How do you make a bequest to us?

There are a number of ways you can make a bequest to Dying with Dignity NSW:

  • You can bequeath a specific amount of money or an item of value such as shares or property.
  • You can bequeath a percentage of your estate, e.g.  50%, 20%, 10%.  (This ensures your family and friends are not disadvantaged by changes in the size of your estate, or by inflation).
  • You may decide, after providing for family and friends, that you would like to leave the residual of your estate to DYING WITH DIGNITY NSW

bequests solicitorIn our experience, it is not wise for us to give generic legal advice, which may not be appropriate to your circumstance. The best way to ensure your will does what you intend is to have it drawn up by a solicitor or the NSW Trustee and Guardian (NB: they have quite a lot of information about estate planning and making a will on their website – click here – or you can phone them on 1300 364 103).

The first question the solicitor or trustee will ask if for our ACN : The details of our organisation is DYING WITH DIGNITY NSW ( Australian Company Number 002 545 235) – click for a copy of the company registration – asic dwdnsw company summary 2017 – or you can search the ASIC site to confirm both the certificate and its currency.

NB: If you already have a will you do not need to write a new one, as your solicitor can simply add a codicil that amends, rather than replaces, a previously executed will.
